Background of the study
Urbanization has dramatically transformed the architectural landscape in many Nigerian regions, including Oredo Local Government in Edo State. Traditional courtyard housing, which once epitomized sustainable living and communal harmony, is increasingly being replaced by modern high-density constructions (Ighodaro, 2023). These indigenous architectural forms are characterized by open communal spaces, natural ventilation, and a design that fosters family interaction and cultural identity. The rapid pace of urban development, driven by economic imperatives and population growth, has led to the marginalization of these traditional designs. Contemporary studies suggest that the erosion of courtyard housing not only affects architectural heritage but also disrupts social interactions and the transmission of cultural values (Osagie, 2024). The study critically examines the factors leading to this architectural shift, exploring the implications for community well-being and cultural continuity. It further evaluates whether elements of traditional courtyard design can be integrated into modern urban planning to enhance sustainability and cultural preservation (Emeka, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Urbanization in Oredo Local Government has resulted in the rapid decline of traditional courtyard housing architecture, posing challenges to cultural preservation and sustainable community living. The displacement of these indigenous architectural forms is causing a loss of cultural identity and disrupting community cohesion. This study aims to identify the primary drivers of this decline and assess the impact of modern urban development on traditional housing structures (Ighodaro, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To evaluate the impact of urbanization on traditional courtyard housing.

  2. To identify the drivers behind the decline of indigenous architectural practices.

  3. To recommend strategies for integrating traditional design elements in modern urban planning.

Research questions

  1. How has urbanization affected traditional courtyard housing architecture?

  2. What factors contribute to the decline of indigenous housing forms?

  3. What strategies can integrate traditional architecture into modern urban design?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Urbanization significantly reduces the prevalence of traditional courtyard housing.

  2. Economic factors drive the replacement of indigenous architecture.

  3. Integrative design approaches can preserve traditional housing elements in urban development.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the challenges posed by urbanization on traditional housing architecture. Its findings will inform urban planning policies that seek to preserve cultural heritage while promoting sustainable development in Oredo Local Government (Osagie, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining the impact of urbanization on traditional courtyard housing architecture in Oredo Local Government and excludes other architectural styles or regions.

Definitions of terms

  1. Urbanization: The process of city expansion and modernization.

  2. Courtyard housing: Traditional residential architecture featuring an open central space.

  3. Cultural preservation: Efforts to maintain and protect indigenous heritage.
